Reading Club
Creating lifelong Readers
Great readers aren't born, they are made. Reading is like sports for the brain. Becoming a great pitcher or quarterback takes hours of practice. Coaches provide baseball and football players with feedback and over the years the players improve. All great readers start out small with simple words and phrases. It is only after years of reading and receiving feedback from teachers and parents do children become great readers.
In Reading Club we read books every day. We're exploring different types of books: biographies, informational books, procedural books, comic books, fiction, and poetry. We are working on improving the way we read by working on reading with expression, accuracy, and fluency. Most of all we are working on understanding what we read. We are asking ourselves questions like, "What message is the author trying to give me?" and "What did the author do to help me understand what he or she was trying to say?"
We can work together to make sure that our students have many opportunities to read. Students in Reading Club will bring home books every day. They also have books from the school library. The public library and used bookstores have great reading materials for children.

Good Readers Read
Is your child a member of Reading Club this year?
Every day in Reading Club your child reads.
Reading with me for 30 minutes is a start, but it isn't enough! That's why your child should be bringing home a plastic folder with one or two books inside each evening.
There are two kinds of books that are available for your child to take home:
Encourage your child to show you what he or she is reading. If you haven't seen a Reading Club folder coming home with your child, ask him or her to make sure to remember that reading time at home is important!
The more your child reads, the better reader your child will be!
